Free-Spirited Summer Solstice Elopement in Lofoten

Today’s incredible real wedding story is about an enchanting elopement in Lofoten. Maz and Dave flew all the way from Australia to above the arctic circle in Norway. They chose the remote archipelago of the Lofoten Islands to say their wedding vows, on the 21st June during the summer solstice. They took with them the amazing photographer Thomas Stewart. If Thomas’s stunning pictures alone won’t make you want to elope to Norway, then Maz’s beautiful story will…

An Elopement in Lofoten

Dave and I have always loved travelling - it is of our strongest points of similarities and what we love about each other. In 2015 we travelled to Norway and decided to do the hike up to Pulpit Rock. We had our little twins with us (2 years old at the time) and we did the hike with the kids in carriers on our backs. On top of Pulpit rock while taking in the majestic view and surrounds Dave asked me to marry him. We fell in love with Norway on this trip, not just because of the engagement, but because of the incredible landscape, the mountains, the fjords, the quiet life and stillness that appears to surround you when driving through this beautiful country.
Fast forward a year and we were planning a wedding celebration with our friends and family. We had a wedding in mind that would resemble a weekend wedding festival surrounded by our friends and family. But along the way, whilst planning this big wedding we realised that it was not for us. We have always wanted to do things our way and not because of tradition or norm. We found that with planning a wedding also came unnecessary stress and a feeling that this was not exactly what we wanted. So we decided to elope.
The beauty of Norway had taken our breath away when we visited the year before and it felt perfect to elope there. This time we wanted to be somewhere remote, somewhere that not everyone gets to visit, somewhere with incredible views - a place of soul. So on the 21st June at summer solstice we were getting ready in a little fisherman’s hut on Lofoten in the Arctic Circle in Norway. It was howling wind and pouring with rain outside - it was perfect. We hiked up to this incredible mountain valley that Thomas has scouted for us. It was the most amazing feeling to see this place for the first time just before our ceremony. We wanted it this way. It was such a special experience taking it all in, standing in the bottom of this mountain valley, hearing the arctic stream beneath us and exchanging vows of forever.
It felt pure, real and so us!
